Being a fearless kind of fellow, my Uncle Bertrand was one of the first volunteers for Swiss manned space flight. With his years of experience cropdusting in the Zurich Oberland, shooting womp rats in Beggar's Canyon, and buzzing fairytale castles to amuse aristocratic ladies in the mountains of Bavaria, my uncle was exactly the kind of chap the Agency sought to shoot into space on the end of a big stick of dynamite.
As the preparations for the first manned mission gained pace, the dozens of applicants for the honour of being first man in space were whittled down to a shortlist of three: A young farmer from Uri, who'd wandered into the research centre by accident, and been detained by the attentions of the astronauts' mascot, a pretty young nanny goat called Agnes; A young chap from Argau, who'd driven into the research centre by accident - through the wall - and been enticed to stay by the offer of free bright white astronaut's socks for the rest of his natural life; and my Uncle Bertrand.
