A broad coalition of organizations today reached out to key leaders of Senate and House appropriations committees to request that grant funding for the Victims of Crime Act program not be reduced. We greatly appreciate your commitment to sustained funding that this Congress has regularly provided each year in the annual appropriations process, most recently in the final FY23 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies CJS budget.
Our programs and the victims we serve are facing what can only be described as a catastrophe. The impact will fall hardest on the smallest programs, particularly programs in rural communities, low-income communities, and Communities of Color. Potentially tens of millions of victims nationwide will lose access to lifesaving and life-sustaining child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and other victim services. Without access to these critical services, the real-time impact will not only be felt by individuals and families, but also in communities nationwide.
It is important to note that, after being kept in isolation due to the pandemic, many survivors are just now coming forward seeking services, and losing access now will further set back their healing. Given the dire potential consequences, on behalf of the victims and survivors we all serve, we ask that you invest adequate funding for VOCA in the final FY24 Appropriations budget without cutting other critical DOJ grant programs that provide vital victim services and protect public safety.
We hope that in the coming days, we will have the opportunity to meet with your staff to discuss this issue further.
