American Protestant missionary efforts in the Philippines flowered in the early decades of the twentieth century, when ideas about gender and especially about "modern womanhood" underwent global transformation. The nineteenth-century concept of "woman's work for woman" persisted among missionaries.
Newer American ideals coincided with Filipinas' desire for education, leadership, and a place in civil society and public culture. While Filipinas drew from what missions offered, they simultaneously resisted assimilation and imperialism. They incorporated elements of American modernity, Protestantism, and domesticity alongside a burgeoning Filipino nationalism. They forced missionaries to recognize their autonomous concerns and ambitions. Indigenous forms and meanings could trump Americanization -- like the native dress, known as the terno, that Filipinas wore on public occasions.
The formality and elegance of the terno permitted women at the mission to perform their modernity in a particularly Filipino idiom. Filipinas thus helped to shape missionary work and community even though they rarely appear in official records by name. Reading the mission archives against the grain, this paper seeks to recover at least in part the agency of Filipinas who toured as Bible women, sought advanced education, played inter-mural sports, and wore butterfly sleeves, adapting selected aspects of American womanhood and rejecting others to create their own modern ideal.
