Florence Newton was a beggar-woman accused of cursing townsfolk to death. We have more newsletters. Set against the backdrop of the great European witch hunts spanning two centuries and reaching across the Atlantic as far as America, the six-part series offers a unique lens into the social, political and religious conditions that resulted in the terrible persecution and deaths of thousands of women.
A beggar-woman, she was accused of cursing the household of a local, wealthy merchant called John Pyne, after she had been refused a morsel of food at his house at Christmas, Newton was said to have 'enchanted' the servant girl who turned her away, Mary Langdon, by 'violently kissing' her in the streets of Youghal. At Newton's trial at the Cork Assizes in September , the servant girl gave evidence that within a few days of this encounter, she saw Florence and the Devil standing by her bedside, tempting her to become a witch.
The Witch of Youghal was also accused of cursing a man to death by kissing his hand through the bar of a prison cell. The record of the verdict is lost - but historians believe that given the severity of the accusations and the weight of the legal expertise against her, Florence Newton became one of the hundreds of Irish women to be executed for the crime of 'witchcraft' in Ireland.
The fist episode of the new series airs at 10pm tonight on TG4 and tells the story of both the Witch of Youghal and Kilkenny noble woman Alice Kyteler, who was put on trial, suspected of killing her husband while in league with the Devil.
