Home Issues 42 The history of sexual norms: the At what age is one still too young, or already too old, to be considered as a sexual subject? And to what extent are these questions political issues? The articles in this collection explore different historical forms of the articulation between the way age is experienced, the structuring of gender relations, and the regulation of sexuality. In France, this was established between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in the context of religious reforms, as the practice spread of recording newborn children in parish registers, 1 superseded from by the civil registration records.

The age below which parental consent was required in order to marry was 25 for women and 30 for men. For example, while the child protection laws developed in France in the nineteenth century did not distinguish between child victims by sex, any more than the law making primary education compulsory between the ages of 6 and 13, the Civil Code of defined the legal minimum marriageable age as 15 for girls and 18 for boys.
This difference was only abolished very recently by the law of 4 April , which made the marriageable age the same for men and women. The assimilation of married women to minors in civil law was one of the issues on which feminists campaigned throughout the French Third Republic. What did an individual have the right and duty to do at each age, according to his or her sex, or position within the family?
In contemporary times, a new governmental practice has been superimposed on to this social and moral classification of ages, through the laws, received knowledge and policies regulating and prescribing relationships and affects between generations.
