The Moscow Zoo has a new resident: a bearded vulture, or ossifrage. These powerful, magnificent creatures from the Accipitridae family are among the largest birds in the world. Their population in the wild is going steadily down. Many zoos in the world are now making effort to preserve this endangered aviary species and create a backup population.
The Moscow Zoo is also involved in finding a solution to that problem. The Center for the Reproduction of the Rare Animal Species near Volokolamsk, for instance, has a pair of adult bearded vultures that recently reached the reproductive age. They live in conditions that resemble their natural habitat as closely as possible. The new resident arrived to Moscow from the Almaty Zoo. The rare bird is very young.
It is not even a year old. Zoologists do not know yet if it is male or female. They will figure that out in the fall, during the scheduled veterinary check-up for all birds of prey. That will help zoologists with their main objective: to grow the population of those rare birds. The bearded vulture lives in one of the enclosures of the Birds of Prey Rock pavilion.
Its home is a man-made mountain with multiple grottoes and balconies. Zoologists made everything there comfortable for the new arrival, so the bird got used to its new home quickly. They prefer to live in inaccessible mountainous regions that feature sheer rocky bluffs. They are expert flyers that can climb as high as 7, meters above the sea level. The bearded vulture is one of the largest and most powerful birds on our planet. Adult specimens can be up to 1.
