A nineteenth-century coffee boom in Brazil's Southeast energized the economic and political power of Minas Gerais, and re-introduced a massive influx of enslaved Africans and Afro-Brazilians. Hearing Brazil examines musical communities, dance traditions, musical instruments, performers, issues of race, religiosity, and socio-cultural developments that have created the cornerstones of regional identity.
