The funny limericks on this page were written by Edward Lear way back in the s and s but they're as silly and funny today as they were back then. Limericks are basically short rhyming poems which are almost always funny. Like other types of poetry, limericks - especially funny limericks - are a great way of helping children learn about language and how it works. Limericks are always written using the same five-line rhyme structure which is generally known as AABBA.
Officially this structure is described as a form of anapestic trimeter, an anapest being a foot of poetic verse consisting of three syllables , the third longer or accentuated to a greater degree than the first two. In practice, three syllables put together in this way with the emphasis on the third one sounds like da-da-DA. Edward Lear wrote many, many limericks back in the s and s, although they were written for the enjoyment of adults rather than for children.
These early, funny limericks didn't involve dirty humour as many limericks written in more recent times do. They were genuine nonsense poems meant simply to amuse people. Lear didn't invent limericks but he's regarded as the person responsible for making them as popular as they are today. His first book of funny limericks , called 'A Book of Nonsense', was first published in and is still in print today. Lear wrote many, many funny limericks.
Some of them are included below for you to share with your children. The limericks on this page are my favourites so they're the ones I share with the children I teach. I often get the older children to write their own funny limericks after we've read a few together. It's great fun to do and something you might like to try with your own children. I'm always surprised at how quickly children pick up the rhythm and structure of limericks and am often amazed at the wonderful funny limericks they write themselves.
