This paper deviates from this dominant narrative of violence on women by the men of the other communities and shows how women were not safe in the hands of men of their community as well as within their families. The paper investigates the women's helplessness on their side of the border, within the boundary of their community, in the hands of the men of the same community who were supposedly their protectors. Using Ritu Menon and Kamla Bhasin's theoretical work on Partition, Borders and Boundaries, this paper argues that the post-Partition sexual violence on women was not exclusively communal, and did not have any caste, class, age or religious Ghoshal 2 limitation.
The selected stories provide a wide range of women characters in terms of their age, religion, class and economic condition, and by clubbing the stories with the testimonies of the victim-survivors, as noted by Menon and Bhasin, the paper shows that a woman's body was not just a site of a war between two religious communities, but it was also considered a mere object which can be violated or sacrificed anytime for the benefit of the males of that particular community.
