As the clock struck 9pm, my partner, along with all the other new dads were ushered away as visiting hours ended on the post-natal ward. Even though it is seven years ago now, I still remember feeling so sad he had to leave us. I needed him. My son's birth was a traumatic one, where a forceps delivery narrowly saved me from theatre, but rules were rules and I was expected to care for our baby alone once off the labour ward.

Obviously I was in hospital, so medical help was on hand, but it's not the same as having your partner by your side. I can't even imagine how difficult it was for him to walk away down the corridor, leaving behind his newborn baby and not being welcome back until the next day. Although at least he got one final undisturbed night's sleep!

I stayed awake all night, I daren't take my eyes off my beautiful baby, I didn't even dare go to the toilet in case someone took him - even though you can 'lock' the cot. I just know my post-birth experience would have been so much nicer if he was allowed to stay with us and help, which is why I welcome the new move by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to allow fathers and birth partners the chance to stay overnight once the baby is born.
